The rise of the global market has benefited everyone who splits into two platoons, the leading group consisting of Sotheby's, Artcurial and Christie's, followed by another far behind. Here is the ranking.
1. Sotheby's: 213 million euros
This is his best year since entering the French market in 2001. Sotheby's is at the top of the podium with the highest annual amount for a sales house in France in the last five years. "This result is the realization of a strategy developed over several years around a few strong axes, explains its president Guillaume Cerutti, like that of selling in Paris works as important as the Portrait of Paul Alexandre by Modigliani or the statuette of Shyama Tara of Mongolia ".

Once again, the American company is demonstrating that the Parisian market has the influence and know-how to retain the confidence of sellers and has managed to attract bidders from around the world. This year again, 80% of buyers in its Parisian sales are foreign and 35% come from other continents than Europe.
In 2014, thirty-seven private collections were distributed by Sotheby's in Paris, which represents about one third of its turnover for the year. The private collection of Félix Marcilhac totaled nearly 25 million euros, after two days of sales. Beyond this event, sales of collections in the field of classical decorative arts (Maréchal Berthier, Vicomtesse de Courval ...), arts of Africa and Oceania (Frum, Bonew, ...) or books and manuscripts ( Libraries R. and BL and Carlo de Porteere) prove that the amateurs are attentive to the quality of the provenances and the prestige of those who formed these collections. Sotheby's will continue in 2015 to make these pedigree sales one of its priorities.
Statue Fang Mabea, Cameroon, awarded 4, .3 million euros. World record for a Fang sculpture.
In the field of the Internet, the number of lots sold on the Web has almost doubled in two years. This channel now accounts for between 8 and 9% of Sotheby's France's annual auctions, even though most Internet bidders still target relatively small lots. There is, however, a growing use of this vector for works of greater value: in 2014, ten works over € 100,000 were awarded to online buyers.
And 130 customers followed or participated via this support to the sale of Asian Arts in December 2014! This boom, verified for all disciplines and in other Sotheby's world locations, justifies the choice made in 2014 by this house to partner with eBay. Another sector on the rise: private sales that remain confidential. Only two of them, in the Louvre and the Getty, were unveiled.
2. Artcurial: 192 million euros
The Rond-Point-des-Champs-Elysées house recorded an 8% increase over 2013. The increase is less strong than the last three years when it had a good 50%. Should we integrate the 6 million euros on the 25 million of the Marcilhac collection sold in collaboration with Sotheby's, pro rata on its part, while the sales mandate was signed with the latter? It would be better for Sotheby's to declare the entire sum.
Of the 192 million euros, 76 million come from the lifestyle department (cars, jewelry, watches, vintage, wine), against 110 million for the fine arts, various collections and arts of the twentieth century. The boom in sales of cars (+ 67%) and comics (+ 71.5%) offset a rather weak year in modern and contemporary art. Artcurial is focusing on European development with offices in Brussels, Milan, Vienna and soon Monaco and Tel Aviv to expand its buyer base.
"Our development strategy underscores our ability to export the Artcurial model, which is based in particular on our cultural involvement and the diversity of specialties," says Francis Briest, co-founder of the house. The international dimension, which we have been cultivating for a number of years, is now making perfect sense with our opening in Vienna last September, after Brussels and Milan ".
For his part, his counterpart François Tajan, adds that "Artcurial now covers the entire field of major specialties related to the twentieth century, some as the comics, are very innovative. The balance between the historical departments of art and lifestyle, developed over the past several years, is paying off. "
World record for a comic book auction. Hergé, Dark blue cover pages, India ink for the cover pages of the albums of Tintin's adventures published from 1937 to 1958 sold for € 2,654,400, $ 3,621,734, with fees. The estimate was 700,000 to 900,000 €.
3. Christie's: 180, 7 million euros
The house of François Pinault passes in 3rd position. Yet strong in the art deco sector with major dispersions like that of Claude and Simone Dray in 2006, it has failed to win the Marcilhac collection. "We also missed flagship lots, which were exported to other places like London, New York or Hong Kong," says François de Ricqles, president of Christie's France. One of the highlights of the sale of Hong Kong last November, a pot of peonies by the painter Sanyu (sold 56 million dollars from Hong Kong, 5.9 million), is the example.
Globally, Christie's, which will soon announce its balance sheet, should be largely ahead after the record amount of its evening sale of contemporary art that totaled some $ 852 million in three small hours last November in New York. By adding its sales of the day, significantly more profitable because little or no concessions are made to sellers for the fees, it has garnered nearly $ 1.5 billion product. The arrival of the new managing director, Édouard Boccon-Gibod, foreshadows new directions for the Parisian house.
Gimabattista Tiepolo, <i> Figure of man with fur coat </ i>, awarded 3.7 million euros by Pierre Bergé & Partner. The highest bid of the year at Drouot.
4. Ivory: 57 million euros (12 auction houses in France)
5.Millon: 38, 4 million euros
6. Tajan: 36.2 million euros
7. Piasa: 36 million euros
It is for this house that remains very strong in the design sector (17million euros) a year of restructuring, marked by the move from Drouot to the Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Under the leadership of the auctioneer Frédéric Chambre, a team of about twenty people is active to develop the departments and in particular that of modern and contemporary art that must gain power. Other specialties could emerge such as jewelry or books. Traditional departments, such as Asian art objects, need to consolidate.
8. Cornette de Saint Cyr: 33.5 million euros
9. Aguttes: 32.4 million euros
Up 13.5%.
10. Osenat: 23.5 million euros
A nice figure thanks to the 10 million of the Napoleonic collection from the Principality of Monaco.
11. Pierre Bergé & Associés: 23.5 million euros including 3.1 for its Belgian branch
12. Beaussant-Lefèvre: 20.3 million euros
That's a jump of 13.9%.
Awarded 1, 6 million euros at Beaussant-Lefèvre for this square-shaped seal in celadon nephrite surmounted by two crossed dragons. China, Qianlong period (1736-1795).
Drouot: 374 million euros
With 72 auction houses, we can not compare the result of the auction house with that of the other houses, which however shows a slight decrease compared to 2013. The Asian arts contribute significantly to this result with 9.2 million euros totaled in a single week of sales in December.
